White Prickly Poppy
(Argemone Albifora)
White Prickly Poppy is the most abundant poppy in the state of Texas and sometimes covers large areas in a solid stand. It grows in most of Texas, but the heaviest concentrations are in the south-central part of the state. The large, white flowers, up to 4 inches across, are cup-shaped to nearly flat, and bloom at the top of the stem. The 6 petals are circular with irregular out margins. The numerous stamens are yellow. The 3 sepals end with a spine. If the stem is broken it exudes a white sap that turns yellow when it dries and is helpful in identifying the species. State-wide spread. April - May. Perennial.
